In 2011, Facebook introduced Facebook Messenger as a messaging feature in the platform. But as its popularity grew over the years, Facebook began to separate it as an independent entity. Now a standalone app, Facebook Messenger does not just serve Facebook users, but also those who don’t have Facebook accounts.

What’s more, it easily integrates messaging from both Facebook and Instagram within a single app. With the added capability to handle SMS messages, Facebook Messenger aims to be a comprehensive messaging hub.
