Nyack’s Summit School’s Holistic Approach Is Paying Immense Dividends

Nyack’s Summit School takes a holistic (behavioral, academic, social) approach to the overall welfare and progression of its students. Their “Be Campaign” encourages young learners to practice mindfulness, a powerful instructional compliment for ever-evolving adolescents. While the school has its detractors bringing allegations from previous decades to light, Summit School’s new leadership and the current regime are doing everything in their power to ensure the present and future of their residential campus is bright.

Summit’s team of teachers, psychiatrists, administrators, and support staff work in unison to propel said holistic, child-centric approach, placing an emphasis on a favorable staff-to-student ratio and mental health awareness. One of their new faces, school psychiatrist Dr. Veronica Fellman, was wise in pointing out that students are quick to sniff out disingenuous attempts of camaraderie, and that being transparent as well as meeting at an interpersonal medium, are vital components of legitimizing the types of genuine bonds necessary for an academic institution to thrive. Students have to feel safe in order to learn and to grow, a sentiment made more integral by the fact that Summit School is also their home.

Being a residential school for an array of (often troubled) students facing emotional hurdles will present its own unique issues under any circumstances. Summit School is a last stop of sorts for some teens, and a willingness to consistently take on challenges of such an immense magnitude makes it an almost impossibility to have a spotless record. New residential leadership is well aware of the campus’s past tragedies and is poised to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself. The aforementioned residential leaders (Tiffany Reid and Anthony Geathers) have said they’re committed to building a sense of community and family while fostering the structure and accountability pieces necessary for students to thrive well beyond their time at the school.

Ultimately, the proof is in the product and Summit has seen an array of massive success stories, from Meteorologists to PhDs. They are entrenched in community work and bolstering the presence of the arts in their school (a rarity in today’s academic landscape), often collaborating with successful working creatives. The student body and staff alike are inspired to learn, collaborate, and build with transparency and awareness, practices that will continue to serve the greater good, well-beyond when the walls of campus are home.

Keep up with Summit School:
