6 Tips For Becoming A Successful Digital Marketer- With Hannah Nieves

When you first get into digital marketing, it can seem overwhelming.  There are so many different things to learn, many people feel as if it’s impossible to be successful with it.  But that’s not the case.  Simply follow these six tips and you’ll be well on your way to digital marketing success.

1. Be Willing to Learn

If you’re not willing to learn new things, digital marketing is probably not the field for you.  The industry is not only very competitive and growing more so every day, it’s constantly changing.  What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.  If you want to succeed in the digital marketing industry you need to love the idea of constantly learning new things in a fast-changing and evolving field.

2.  Update Your Knowledge

Staying abreast of industry knowledge is crucial to the success of a digital marketer.  You need to be sure to follow the major digital marketing sites. It also makes sense to follow the social media accounts of the major individual people in the industry as well.

One of the major parts of the digital marketing landscape is paid advertising.  This means Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The paid advertising platforms of these companies are always evolving and you’ll need to stay on top of the changes or an advertising campaign that was very profitable one day could end up losing a lot of money the next.

3. Networking is Crucial

Be sure and network and surround yourself with marketers that are more successful and talented than yourself. Like Napoleon Hill said, your network is crucial to your success.  They can open up doors and opportunities for you that you might otherwise never have, not to mention help you out when you run into problems.

When you can, network in person, not just via social media or email.  Find conferences, seminars and meetups so you can develop relationships face to face with others in the digital marketing space.  You’ll also be able to use these as a change to improve your skills as well as develop new ones. Work with EMR to find digital marketing roles that are perfect for you.

4. Use Personal Projects To Test And Learn

One of the great things about digital marketing is how easy it can be for a single person to test out different strategies to learn what works and what doesn’t.  Don’t just take some ‘experts’ word for it.  It’s not always as simple or clear cut as that.  You need to find what works for you and your business.  For example, many strategies that work in the ‘make money online’ industry don’t necessarily work in other industries.

It’s important to use personal projects to test out different theories and tactics.  You can learn a great deal about different areas such as SEO, PPC, Content Marketing, Copyrighting, Social Media and more.

5. Learn The Lingo

The lingo, or terminology, is different for every industry.  You’ll have a tough time in digital marketing if you don’t learn it.  You need to know what acronyms like PPC, SEO, SEM and more mean.  If you don’t understand the differences, you’ll be seen as a beginner who needs a lot more training.  If you don’t know the terminology it can be difficult for you to analyze any campaigns and figure out what is working and what isn’t, so that you can make adjustments.

6. A Personal Brand is Important

Nothing helps you get in the door of a company as a digital marketer by building your own brand.  A digital marketing company looking to hire a digital marketer to build their brand isn’t going to feel too comfortable with someone who hasn’t built their own.

If you have a strong online brand yourself, a company will know that you can do what you say you can do and this will give you a big edge on getting the job.
