Empowering Artistry: Mandi Masden’s Apostrophe Puzzles Revolutionizes the Industry

Mandi Masden

In a world where art appreciation often feels exclusive and inaccessible, Mandi Masden, founder of Apostrophe Puzzles, is breaking down barriers one puzzle at a time. Apostrophe Puzzles isn’t just about fitting pieces together; it’s about celebrating contemporary artists of color, fostering inclusivity, and making art appreciation a tangible experience for everyone.

Mandi Masden

The story behind Apostrophe Puzzles is as inspiring as the puzzles themselves. Masden’s journey began in 2019 with a failed attempt to purchase her first piece of original art due to its exorbitant price tag. Simultaneously, a thoughtful friend gifted her a custom puzzle of the very painting she longed to own. This serendipitous moment sparked an idea – what if puzzles could be a gateway to fine art appreciation? Thus, Apostrophe Puzzles was born.

Masden’s vision goes beyond merely creating puzzles; it’s about representation and economic empowerment. As a Black woman, she felt overlooked by an industry that lacked diversity and failed to reflect her culture and aesthetic. Determined to make a change, she set out to amplify the voices of Black and Brown artists by featuring their works in Apostrophe Puzzles.

The process of selecting artists for Apostrophe Puzzles involves deliberate intentionality. Masden scours social media and explores art fairs and pop-ups to discover emerging talents whose works resonate with her ethos. Each artist featured by Apostrophe Puzzles receives a generous 12% royalty from every purchase, doubling the industry standard. This commitment to equitable compensation aims to address the systemic challenges artists of color face in the art world.

Since its inception, Apostrophe Puzzles has been embraced by an audience hungry for diversity and sophistication in puzzle design. The brand’s innovative approach has disrupted the traditionally homogeneous puzzle industry, expanding its consumer base to include a more diverse and modern audience.

Beyond commercial success, Apostrophe Puzzles is deeply rooted in community impact. Through partnerships with nonprofits like Project Art, the brand supports art education initiatives in historically marginalized communities. A portion of each sale goes towards sponsoring art classes and providing resources for aspiring young artists, ensuring equitable access to artistic opportunities.

Sustainability is also a core value for Apostrophe Puzzles. By collaborating with environmentally responsible designers and manufacturers, Masden ensures that her products are both eco-friendly and socially conscious.

However, Masden’s journey as a Black-owned, woman-led entrepreneur hasn’t been without its challenges. Securing funding and building brand awareness have been ongoing struggles, compounded by the additional hurdles of launching during a pandemic. Yet, her resilience and unwavering belief in her vision have propelled Apostrophe Puzzles forward.

For Masden, the most rewarding aspect of her entrepreneurial journey is the feedback from customers who rediscover the joy of puzzling through Apostrophe’s inclusive designs. These stories serve as a testament to the brand’s mission of making art accessible and relatable to all.

Looking ahead, Masden envisions continued growth and collaboration for Apostrophe Puzzles. With the recent release of their newest collection featuring the works of talented artists, the brand is poised to further expand its reach and impact.

Aspiring entrepreneurs looking to make a social impact through their businesses can draw inspiration from Masden’s journey. Her advice to believe in the value of your product, seek help when needed, and embrace the challenges with determination and resilience resonates deeply.

Ultimately, Apostrophe Puzzles is more than just a business venture for Mandi Masden; it’s a labor of love driven by a desire to empower artists, celebrate diversity, and make the world of fine art accessible to all. Masden’s journey exemplifies the power of entrepreneurship to effect positive change and uplift communities.
