From X-Rays to Innovation: Meet the Visionaries Behind PathKeeper’s Mission

The world of spinal surgery is currently in the midst of an exciting transformation driven by the visionary minds at PathKeeper, who have introduced a groundbreaking navigation system that not only eradicates the reliance on X-rays in surgery but also brings unparalleled precision to the operating table. PathKeeper’s impending impact on spine surgery is nothing short of revolutionary, and the tale of its genesis into the U.S. market is a captivating journey woven with chance encounters, a shared zeal for innovation, and an unwavering quest for excellence.

Erez Lampert, at the helm of PathKeeper as its CEO, possesses a fresh outsider’s perspective when it comes to spinal surgery. His professional background, notably his work at Invisalign, where he developed a 3D intraoral camera, afforded him unique insights into cutting-edge healthcare technology. The pivotal “light bulb moment” transpired when he introduced dental technology to a spine surgeon in Israel, whose immediate interest and enthusiasm laid the foundation for PathKeeper’s remarkable journey.

Erez’s proficiency in 3D optics technology and his unyielding passion for innovation propelled him to the forefront of PathKeeper’s creation. His vision for a real-time navigation system devoid of radiation has, in essence, expanded the boundaries of what spine surgery can achieve.

The company’s CTO, Dr. Opher Kinrot, CTO has 25 years of experience leading multi-disciplinary R&D teams. Dr. Kinrot worked as CTO and CEO in various medical start-ups, including Roboscopy Medical, where, together with Sony, he developed a new, low-cost surgery robot. He is a graduate of the prestigious IDF Talpiot program and holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science.

A vital player within the PathKeeper US team is Ted Bird, a seasoned industry veteran boasting over three decades of experience in the spine business. His involvement with the company began through his role as a fundraiser for pioneering MedTech startups. Ted’s profound understanding of the spine field and his constant quest for groundbreaking innovations eventually led him to PathKeeper. His journey was underscored by the realization that this technology was genuinely revolutionary.

Ted’s position as a strategic advisor speaks volumes about his belief in PathKeeper’s potential. His expertise in both spine and startup fundraising, coupled with his extensive network within the MedTech industry, renders him an invaluable addition to the team. He brings strategic insights, deep experience as a respected industry executive leader, and an unwavering commitment to aiding PathKeeper in making its mark in the U.S. market.

The narrative of Ryan Leblanc’s introduction to PathKeeper is one steeped in serendipity and a shared passion for innovative technology. Ryan’s career began as a physical therapist with a strong focus on spinal research. During a spine conference in Boston, he serendipitously stumbled upon a mention of PathKeeper in a brochure, prompting his quest to explore this technology further.

Ryan’s experience as a physical therapist and his profound knowledge of spine-related technology seamlessly aligned with PathKeeper’s mission. His “AHA moment” materialized when he recognized the potential of this technology to objectively measure and evaluate surgical procedures. Ryan is Pathkeeper’s first employee in the USA. As Chief Commercial Officer, he is guiding and executing the carefully controlled U.S. commercialization plan.

The involvement of Brandon Koehler in the PathKeeper journey transpired from a chance encounter and the alignment of personal interest and professional expertise. With more than two decades of experience in healthcare finance, including roles as V.P. of Finance and CFO at top-tier healthcare systems and physician organizations, Brandon boasted a deep-seated background in healthcare.

His entry into PathKeeper commenced when his wife, a distinguished spine surgeon, expressed her excitement about the innovative technology. Brandon’s profound understanding of both the financial and practical challenges in spine surgery added a crucial layer of insight to the team. As the CFO for U.S. Operations, his role encompasses pro formas, financial and capital fundraising strategy, and an unwavering commitment to the company’s mission.

According to Jeff Wertz, one of the Pathkeeper’s strategic advisors with 33 years of spine experience in both sales/clinical environments, “The ability for Pathkeeper to bring a differentiated technology to market that is radiation-free, offers sub-millimeter accuracy and can provide the surgeon newly established surgical parameters (sagittal/coronal/etc.) after osteotomy, deformity correction, and cage insertion, is game-changing and will create a paradigm shift in the market.” He continues, “Improving patient safety and enhancing practice outcomes will be a legacy that Pathkeeper technology will create for generations to come.”

The PathKeeper team’s journey is a testament to the remarkable synergy that can emerge from chance encounters, personal passion, and shared aspirations. Each member brings a unique set of skills and insights to the table, culminating in a collaborative spirit that propels PathKeeper into the future of spine surgery. Their collective expertise and unwavering dedication to enhancing surgical outcomes signify a pivotal turning point in the field, redirecting the focus from X-rays to innovation.
