As summer transitions into autumn, Europe unveils some of its most captivating and lesser-known destinations. Charlie Neville, Marketing Manager of JayWay Travel, shares his top five hidden gems to explore in August and September 2024. Each offers unique experiences that make it exceptional for late summer travel. He also tips the best ways to travel between these destinations, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey.

1. The Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites in September are an absolute delight. With the temperatures soaring in the South, Northern Italy’s cool mountain air is refreshing,” says Neville. “Whether you’re after an active vacation or a relaxing escape, the Dolomites won’t disappoint.”

This stunning mountain range offers glorious outdoor activities like hiking in perfect weather conditions. Additionally, the Gran Festa da d’Istà, a three-day cultural feast, reveals the secrets of local traditions, gastronomy, and the vibrant Parade of The Ladins.

2. Tuscany – Umbria – Piedmont, Italy

Truffle hunting in Italy is a truly unique experience,” notes Neville. “UNESCO has even recognized Italian truffle hunting and extraction as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”

From September to November, the regions of Tuscany, Umbria, and Piedmont are prime locations for truffle hunting. This period is packed with events celebrating this prized delicacy, making it an excellent time to visit these scenic regions.

3. Gdansk, Poland

“Gdansk is a hidden gem that offers cool weather and a rich history,” says Neville. “Its Old Town looks straight out of a storybook.”

In August, Gdansk hosts St. Dominic’s Fair, a cultural and trade event dating back to 1260. As one of Europe’s oldest and largest open-air markets, the Fair promises a captivating experience filled with history and culture.

4. Cyclades Islands, Greece

“The Cyclades Islands, beyond Mykonos and Santorini, have so much to offer,” highlights Neville. “Milos, Naxos, and Paros are perfect examples of islands that combine beautiful scenery with a laid-back atmosphere.”

September is ideal for visiting these islands, as the crowds thin out, but the weather remains perfect for beach outings and exploration.

5. Budapest, Hungary

“Budapest is a versatile destination with something for everyone,” says Neville. “August visitors can enjoy the vibrant Sziget Festival, while September offers the charming Wine Festival at Budapest’s Castle.”

Budapest’s rich history, diverse architecture, and renowned spas make it a standout destination. The Sziget Festival is one of Europe’s largest music festivals, while the Wine Festival provides a more relaxed cultural experience in a picturesque setting.

Essential Packing Tips for a European Summer Vacation

Packing smartly is critical to a smooth European adventure. Here are five essential tips to keep in mind:

  1. Consider Going Carry-On Only With high checked bag fees and the risk of baggage delays; packing light can save time and hassle. “There’s no fear of baggage going missing if you’re traveling carry-on only,” advises Neville.
  2. Pack according to Your Destination and type of Trip. “It’s always good to have at least one smart outfit,” suggests Neville. “Whether attending a concert or enjoying a fancy dinner, dressing well helps you blend in.”
  3. Don’t Be Afraid to Get Laundry Done: Save space by doing laundry during your trip. “Many hotels offer laundry services, so you don’t need to pack as much,” says Neville.
  4. Be Wise About Your Electrical Items “Leave unnecessary electronics at home,” recommends Neville. “European sockets differ, and not all devices will work there.”
  5. Still, Checking Your Luggage? Plan for the Worst. “Always pack essentials like a change of clothes and medications in your carry-on,” advises Neville. This precaution ensures you’re prepared in case your checked luggage is delayed.
