How To Maintain Solar Battery For Your Solar Panels

Solar panels are the solution to provide your home or office with a solar electric system. It is helpful to add 24*7 electricity to your home. You will need to focus on the particular aspects of solar panels to deal with the solar energy systems in your area.

A solar panel needs to consider an inverter, a solar battery, and the grid to convert and ensure electricity at your place. However, all these components for the solar ecosystem are necessary to maintain and adjust properly to ensure better results and longevity.

Here we will discuss the importance of solar batteries using solar electricity systems and their maintenance instances. Without proper maintenance, it will not be possible for a solar battery to provide you with better service for a long time.

Apart from that, you also need to understand the size of solar panels and batteries to get adequate service with service hours per day. For instance, if you go for 10 kilowatt-hours (kWh) long solar batteries, you might get 10 to 12 hours of service.

On the other hand, in a straightforward way, you might get 13 to 16 hours of service with 13.5kw batteries.

This is how it works and now let’s find out the different types of batteries that we can use for solar panels.

Types Of Batteries Used In Solar Panels

Solar batteries simply store the batteries in the solar panels and ensure the fact that it stores the energy collected by the solar panels from the daylight.

Among the various types of batteries, some are efficient enough to deal with the particular aspects of solar panels. So let’s find out the batteries and their key perspectives and features.

  • Lead Acid batteries
  • Lithium-Ion battery

Well, Lead Acid batteries are cheap and affordable, and you will also find these batteries are the most tested solar batteries for energy storage. In addition, it can provide you with a lifespan of 3 to 5 years.

On the other hand, Lithium-Ion batteries are getting popular these days. And it considers low self-discharge and so it will create a problem for long-term charging.

However, you can use both these batteries if you understand the maintenance perspective. In this modern world, being efficient with technological tools is very much related to the particular aspects of maintenance.

Machines are all about service and maintenance, and we all know that. But, apart from that, solar batteries can be judged through various instances.

  • The capacity of the battery.
  • Depth of Discharge (DoD).
  • Round-trip Efficiency.
  • Life & Warranty.

Implies a higher usage capacity depends on DoD. For instance, Lead Acid batteries have a DOD of 50%, while Lithium-ion batteries have a higher usable capacity of 80%.

Tips For Solar Battery Maintenance

The lifespan and service of a battery depending on its maintenance. Thus, you need to select the particular battery according to your niche and then follow these steps to keep it maintained.

No matter what battery you choose, if you cannot maintain it, you will lose it in a few days. So maintaining is always better than repairing.

Rotate Your Battery.

This strategy will work better for you if you have a large bank of batteries. However, even if you are using a battery for house usage and electricity, then also you can try and rotate your batteries frequently.

Why do we need to rotate the batteries?

Well, the middle portion of batteries may not get proper charging compared to outside areas. To remove this junk in batteries, you can rotate batteries to ensure that you get enough charge in all your batteries and in every portion of them.

A periodical rotation can be a good option for us when we have more than one solar battery.

Use Interconnect Cables For Large Batteries.

For solar batteries charging resistance may occur due to cable shortage. To reduce this difficulty, you can go for large interconnect cables, which are more efficient in charging your battery better than before.

It is a suitable option to ensure that your large solar batteries are getting even charging at full capacity. For 48v systems, you can use 2/0 cables; for 24v systems, it is recommended to go for 4/0 size cables.

Keep Your Solar Batteries Clean.

Oxidation and dirt layers are common in solar batteries. But if you let it remain on your solar batteries, it will eventually weaken the battery and its processing. In addition, loss of energy due to solar dirt is a common situation for all solar panel holders.

So, what’s the solution?

The only solution is to remove the clamps and clean away the dirt from your batteries.

Charge The Battery Frequently.

There is no better way to maintain your batteries for a long time than charging them frequently. It’s one of the most common and simplest solutions you will ever find.

Besides, if you keep your batteries charged all the time, it may help to reduce the risk of battery damage. So, it’s better to always keep the charging point on your batteries and never let your batteries uncharged for a long time.

Distilled Water Has An Advantage.

People are fond of using additives or electrolytes for lead-acid batteries. This is not the perfect way to flood your batteries, and it will bring more harm than good to your solar batteries.

On the other hand, distilled water has no harm but only a better solution for your batteries. This is the way to simply take care of your batteries and make sure that it lasts longer than you have imagined.

Well, when you are using solar panels, you are already into a renewable process where you need low maintenance and replacement to reduce the carbon footprint. So, it’s better to go for solar batteries and maintain them properly.

How To Replace Batteries?

While replacing your batteries, make sure that you are not going for a mixing purpose. Most of the time, we see people replace one of the batteries and keep other batteries the same, depending on their charging abilities and life span.

Well, if you mix new and old batteries together, there is a chance that the new battery degrades to the old battery’s service capabilities.

This is not what you want. So, follow the above-mentioned steps and ensure a good lifespan of solar batteries.
