Chase Your Vision

I stay motivated by chasing my vision and not dwelling on what could have been. There are a lot of setbacks in business, and not everything goes smoothly. It’s important to focus more on the why than the how when you run into obstacles because it helps you refocus on the goal of what you are trying to accomplish and be able to come up with creative solutions.

Keep the Past in Mind

It’s important to remember your past work, both reminding yourself of all the things you have accomplished and of all the times you faced a challenge that you overcame. There will always be another setback or obstacle, and it’s important to remember that you overcame them last time. You’ll overcome them this time, and you’ll overcome them next time.

Do One Positive Thing

When I face an obstacle, I focus on doing at least one positive thing each day, no matter how small. This might be something like taking a few minutes to write in my journal, stretching or going for a brief walk, talking to a friend and catching up, organizing what’s in front of me even if it’s just the mess on my desk—anything that gives me a little relief or boost of happiness.

By committing to this practice every day, I’m able to keep myself motivated and remain persistent despite dealing with whatever setbacks I may have. It’s helped me stay focused, and it comes with peace of mind knowing that even though things are challenging right now, I can still take steps towards feeling better and being productive.

Stop and Recalibrate

When faced with a setback, it’s important to stop and recalibrate. This can be an opportunity to work on updating your process or finding new opportunities that you may have overlooked when times were good.

For example, I run an online business that has seen some highs and lows in organic search traffic. While some factors of search traffic are out of my control, there are still plenty that I can improve upon. During the low periods, I audited my site, identified key areas that could be improved, and built a plan for making these changes. My business has come out stronger after digging myself out of each of these troughs.

Stay Focused on Long-term Goals

As an entrepreneur, staying motivated through setbacks and obstacles is crucial. One of the best ways to do this is by staying focused on your long-term goals and the impact you want to make. This will help you push through difficult times and keep the bigger picture in mind.

It’s also important to view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. Use obstacles as a chance to evaluate what went wrong and how you can improve. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and loved ones who can provide encouragement and help you overcome challenges.

Additionally, practicing self-care and engaging in activities that recharge you mentally and physically can help you maintain motivation and focus. By staying focused on your vision, embracing challenges, cultivating a support system, and taking care of yourself, you can stay motivated and overcome obstacles as an entrepreneur.

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

I believe that staying motivated in the face of setbacks or obstacles is critical for entrepreneurs. One of the best tips I can offer is to maintain a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset means viewing challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.

This approach allows entrepreneurs to stay focused on finding solutions and remain resilient in the face of adversity. It is also essential to maintain a positive attitude and to seek support when needed.

Set a Leadership Example

Setting an example is crucial. It is one of the most important leadership skills I’ve learned over the years. As the company’s founder, it is my responsibility to establish the company’s values and culture. To accomplish this, I must begin by demonstrating a strong leadership style.

Setbacks and challenges are common for entrepreneurs, and it’s important to maintain motivation to keep moving forward. Maintaining a growth mindset is my best advice for remaining motivated in the face of difficulties. I attempt to see setbacks as growth opportunities rather than failures.

My inspiration and drive to keep improving are maintained and fueled by concentrating on my accomplishments and the lessons I have learned. Having a supportive group of friends, mentors, and coworkers who motivate and inspire me to keep going is also helpful, in my opinion.

Reframe Setbacks as Challenges to Conquer

Reframing is a useful strategy that allows you to manipulate real-world events to make them less stressful and more beneficial for self-growth and fulfillment.

Entrepreneurs face setbacks and obstacles almost every day, and without a healthy coping mechanism, it’s easy to fall prey to negativity and mental exhaustion. It’s a skill you have to acquire, but once you can reframe setbacks and see them as challenges and opportunities for growth, you’ll almost welcome them.

Everything in life is a learning experience, so train yourself to see it ‌before negative emotions take hold and impede good decision-making.

Connect With Customers and Prospects

If you’re feeling the inevitable “down” from the founder’s journey roller coaster, I’ve always found that talking to prospects and customers about what their needs are is the best uplift.

No matter the size or stage of your organization, getting to speak directly with prospects and hearing how you can help them or speaking with customers and hearing how you are helping them is such a rewarding feeling.

Dave Shanley, CEO, Content Camel

Thrive in Competition

Entrepreneurs like me stay motivated when faced with setbacks, as they always aspire for a brighter and better future. Entrepreneurs also are highly competitive by nature. They thrive on the challenge of competition and use it as a source of motivation. When faced with setbacks, the desire to stay ahead of their competitors and to continue to innovate and improve their products or services often spurs them on.

Finally, successful entrepreneurs know how to learn from their setbacks and failures. They view these experiences as opportunities to grow and improve, rather than as roadblocks to success. By analyzing what went wrong and identifying areas for improvement, entrepreneurs can turn setbacks into valuable lessons that help them become more resilient and successful in the future.

Become Your Own Biggest Fan

As an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that to stay motivated during tough times, I need to be my own biggest fan. I remind myself of my vision and passion every day and focus on the progress I’ve made, no matter how small.

I don’t get discouraged by setbacks, but instead, use them as an opportunity to learn and improve. I surround myself with positive people and practice self-care to keep my energy levels high. Above all, I know that every obstacle I overcome brings me one step closer to achieving my dreams.

Lana Gerton, CEO and Founder, LANA

Cycle Through Mission, Breaks, and Fun

As an entrepreneur, staying motivated during setbacks and obstacles requires focusing on the mission statement, taking breaks to recharge, and incorporating fun into work sessions. Remember why you started, prioritize self-care, and celebrate small successes along the way.

One way we stay motivated when handling setbacks is to turn on some low-key music on our Bluetooth speaker in our office and just rock out for a while, then get back to work!
