One Kay Talks Being Independent, Early Beginnings, And Inspiration

Dontavious Hubbard, better known as One Kay, has been making a name for himself out of Chicago, Illinois. The hip hop artist has spent a large part of his life in the streets, doing everything he can to make his way out. Growing up as a gang member, One Kay brings an interesting perspective to the industry. As an independent artist, One Kay has been on a mission to let the world know that people can be hopeful to make a way out of their circumstances. He’s amassed thousands of streams on Spotify alone. We got the chance to pick his brain. Read the interview below:

-Start of interview-

Where are you from?

Chicago, IL.

When did you start making music/get into music?

I Started recording music at the early age of 13. My Family background and their roots come from Having  all genres of Music always being played throughout my childhood growing up.

What is the most challenging thing about being an artist?

The most challenging thing I overcame is being patient.

Are you currently signed or independent?

Independent Artist but I have an affiliation with Rap Mogul Future’s Freebandz Label.

Who is one artist that has influenced your sound?

Lil Wayne.

What do you want your audience to take away after listening to your music?

I want them to take away from listening to my music that even if you come from poverty there’s a way out, as long as you don’t stop pushing at your dreams and keep GOD first.

Are you currently working on content?

Yes, I have lots of new content I have up my sleeve to bless the world with.

What is your greatest achievement as a musician?

Making my way into the industry independently without having a co sign from a major label or artist.

Do you produce your own music? If not who do you work with?

If you’re talking about beats, no, I don’t make my own beats. I can’t release that recipe lol.

Who is one artist you wish you could work with?

Lil Wayne.

Tell us about any new music you have coming out? When is it coming out? What is it about?

I have Mixtapes coming out soon, you might catch your favorite rapper on it, you never know. And it will be out before the end of this year.To be continued….

What does a day inside your shoes look like?

A lot of money being spent, a lot of drip being spilled, and a lot of creative luxury vibes.

Anything else you want the audience to know about you?

Everything that represents me as an Artist is all real, no gimmicks.
