The Importance of Giving Back to the Community: Philanthropic Endeavors by Leland Sandler

Leland Sandler gives back

As the managing partner and executive advisor at The Sandler Group, Leland Sandler only takes time to focus on business. However, he is also avidly dedicated to giving back to the community he serves.

In addition to offering liberal cash contributions, Leland volunteers pro bono and personal time to charitable non-profit organizations and other worthy causes he believes in. Here, we’ll explore a few of his philanthropic efforts within the public and private sectors.

Working with the San Diego Opera

When the renowned San Diego Opera needed leadership and team development assistance, Leland Sandler was happy to come to their aid. For five years, he offered the company his experience pro bono. The result was a stronger connection between the actors, directors, musicians, set designers, and others involved in productions. As an invaluable cultural resource to the community’s residents and visitors alike, the San Diego Opera continues to use Leland’s tips and talents to receive prestigious awards for performances locally and across the border.

Volunteering with the US Department of the Navy and the US Marine Corps

Leland Sandler worked alongside the US Department of the Navy and the US Marine Corps officers. Sandler has spent extensive pro bono time assisting former military personnel transition back into civilian life. Many veterans face several challenges after completing their service.

Some may feel they lack a sense of direction without a clear hierarchy in the military. To assist these individuals in finding a new direction and mission in life, Leland gives his time and tips to them for pursuing education and finding the right civilian job.

Sandler & the Military Advisory Committee of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce

Leland was an active board member of the Military Affairs Advisory Council and worked closely with other members, elected officials, community leaders, and other San Diego organizations. Together, they focused on advocating for policies that improve the quality of life for the local military community.

Sandler personally advocated for housing insecurity solutions, unemployment, excessive taxation, and other issues affecting the former and active military in the San Diego region. He also shared his executive consulting abilities to assist with Operation Connect, a program that connects and educates veterans as they transition to civilian pursuits.

Leland Sandler Believes in Giving From a Pure Heart

Leland states, “Volunteering and pro bono work should always be done with a pure heart.” Donating his skills to help causes he believes in, and those that reflect his values improves the experience and makes him feel like he’s getting back even more than he puts in. In these times of social divisions, having an outlet to make new friends through volunteering helps build stronger community ties.

It’s Not All Work and No Play

Beyond volunteering, charitable endeavors, and his professional responsibilities, Sandler has several interests and hobbies. He enjoys photography, hiking, and cross-country skiing because of his location and appreciation for outdoor pursuits. Other passions include reading novels and writing short stories.
