Post Malone Pays $2 Million for The One Ring Pulled By A Fan In A Card Pack

Say “Congratulations” to Post Malone who picked up The One Ring from a fan back on July 20, 2023, from a female fan. He paid $2 million in compensation because of the card’s high value. What makes a card so expensive? What is so special about The One Ring? We will answer that later.

The fan must have felt like he won 777 on a slot game, being able to pull The One Ring, meet a favorite musician, and become a millionaire all in a couple of weeks. Opening Magic packs is as much of a gamble as playing a slots game. You don’t know if you are going to pull a high-value card or if you are going to get all low-value cards just like on slots you won’t know if you win or lose a bet.

Players On the Hunt for The One Ring

When Wizards of the Coast released The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set on June 23, 2023, all dedicated Magic collectors were on the hunt for the serialized card of very high value called The One Ring. In “The Lord of the Rings” story, Dark Lord Sauron was the one who forged the One Ring within the fires spewing from Mount Doom. The lore behind it includes stories of those who have been ring bearers of this One Ring in prior history throughout “The Lord of the Rings” universe.

When Wizards released the set, there was a One of One Ring promotion whereas only one card pack in print would be in Tengwar letters. Because of players highly seeking this card, the value became millions of dollars over time.

What is The One Ring Card?

The One Ring is an indestructible legendary artifact which means it cannot be destroyed by targeted removal in a Magic game. It can only be exiled or board wiped with cards that say something like “Destroy all artifacts” such as the cards, Obliterate and Austere Command.

As long as you cast The One Ring by paying its mana cost, then it has protection from everything until your next turn. You tap the card while it is on the battlefield to place a burden counter on it, and then you get to draw a card for every burden counter that is on it during that turn.

Despite getting to draw more cards as each turn progresses, you lose a life point for every burden counter on it during your upkeep each turn. Either way, it’s a win-win in utilizing your life points as a resource to get you the cards you need to win with your deck.

He Becomes the Ring Bearer

Brook Trafton in Toronto, Canada became the temporary Ring Bearer of The One Ring when he pulled it from a Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth card pack on June 16, 2023. He got a lawyer for safety reasons and waited for a buyer to reach out to her.

While he was expecting maybe $1 million for the card, Post Malone offered her $2 million. This was unbelievable to him, but he was happy to not only meet a favorite musician but also to become a millionaire. Despite this higher level of status in his life, he does not want to leave his job.

Conclusion

Post Malone now owns the most expensive card in Magic: the Gathering history. This is not his first time to make a ballsy move like this, dropping so much money on a card in the game. He also paid $800,000 on a Black Lotus card, another renowned card in Magic’s history.
