The Shanghai MKS family has been designing and building kitchen solutions for more than 40 years. Today, they focus on mobile kitchens, tailor-outfitting food trucks and food trailers using cutting-edge CAD drawing technology to help chefs get the most out of their small spaces in a customized and crafted way.

Shanghai MKS, A Family Business

During a tumultuous time in China, both Jimmy Wong and his wife, Sylvia, made their way to the United States.  Both looking for new opportunities, they met in 1970, married, and started their journey together in New York City, opening a kitchen equipment-building business in 1979 while raising three children. The witty and tenacious couple started the small outfit, making use of Jimmy’s sheet metal fabrication skill and Sylvia’s business savvy. They began by working on commercial kitchens but moved into mobile units as they saw the popularity of food carts rise in 1986.

A close-knit bunch, the couple helped support the immigrant community by providing jobs and critical manufacturing equipment to start food businesses in NYC. The group constructed stoves, steam tables, wok stoves, smoke houses and then mobile kitchen solutions.

The children were always involved in the business in some capacity, helping out where they could. Ernie was drawn to the work and came back after college to help take the business to the next level, modernizing Shanghai MKS with computers and advanced drawing tools like auto CAD.

“Mobile kitchens typically have limited space,” Ernie explains. “The auto CAD tool allows us to map out every millimeter so that customers know exactly what they are getting when they use Shanghai MKS.”

Shanghai MKS Today

Today, the company specializes in high-quality custom built mobile kitchens. They offer full design and installation services for NYC regulation-sized trailers and full-sized food trucks. Shanghai MKS has helped many chefs realize their dreams of the perfect mobile kitchen. Whether you are looking to make specialty donuts, BBQ, dumplings and anything in between, Shanghai MKS can make the perfect kitchen for you.

Once you have envisioned your dream mobile kitchen, sit down with Ernie to create a detailed CAD drawing of what it will look like and work out the details. From there, Ernie can help you find a place to purchase a high-quality step van, or the fabricators can build an NYC regulation trailer for you. Once everything is set and approved, Shanghai MKS starts on the assembly, making sure every last detail is in place. The result is a fantastic custom-made mobile kitchen ready for your best cooking talent!

The group has fabricated custom kitchens for the Wafels & Dinges, Nuchas, Korilla BBQ, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Bon Me, and many more with outstanding results. Customers love the family feel, the boutique like service and out of this world quality. So don’t hold off on your dreams of providing customers with the best food experience possible.
