Sounds of Ephemera: How Munchkin Kat Is Shaping the Future of Glitch-Hop and Mid-tempo Bass

Finding a unique sound is often a musical artist’s greatest challenge, but Munchkin Kat is always experimenting with something new. They take inspiration from their early days as a rock artist when pushing boundaries with the music they now create. Munchkin Kat brings a fresh perspective to genres like glitch-hop and mid-tempo bass on their upcoming album, Ephemera.

With over ten years of experience, Munchkin Kat has a wealth of musical knowledge. They cite David Bowie, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, and Lightnin’ Hopkins as their greatest musical influences. Munchkin Kat enjoys a wide range of genres like funk, disco, and blues and combines all of these genres in his current EDM work. The expansive possibilities of electronic music are what attracted Munchkin Kat to the genre. They are able to manipulate an endless array of sounds instead of being tied to one genre of music or instrument. Munchkin Kat’s electronic music takes inspiration from a wide variety of places, like the Solsborne video game soundtracks and newer artists like Opiuo and Mr. Bill.

Munchkin Kat has always been passionate about music. Ten years ago, they started a rock band with their friends while bartending in Brooklyn while working as a software engineer. Munchkin Kat learned a lot from the experience but ultimately found themself looking for a better work-life balance and more freedom in his music creation. Since 2014, Munchkin Kat has become interested in EDM, and blending their two areas of expertise came naturally.

EDM has allowed Munchkin Kat to grow as an artist. They firmly believe that embracing new techniques and sounds is essential for any musical artist. Improving and finding new ways to be creative is what drives Munchkin Kat forward. Electronic music is a young genre that is constantly growing and changing—perfect for Munchkin Kat’s desire to expand their horizons. EDM has also given Munchkin Kat a new level of independence, allowing them to learn rules and break them. The EDM community is very active online, and anyone can create new music anywhere, anytime.

Munchkin Kat’s second album, Ephemera, is set to be released later this year. The album explores the artist’s signature genre-mixing and explores new territories. Three singles from the album, “Break to the,” “Sin to be Rich,” and “High to This,” have already been released and are available to listen to on Spotify. Munchkin Kat continues exploring glitch-hop and mid-tempo bass on their upcoming album.

ase of Ephemera, Munchkin Kat hopes to continue pushing genre boundaries. They plan to use heavy bass more in the future after tinkering with it on the album. Munchkin Kat also wants to keep incorporating new genres into their music, like Delta/Hill country blues, which they featured on their single, “High to This.” Munchkin Kat’s passion for music leads them to constantly explore and learn new facets of the craft; they say they want to make everything from anything.
