With over ten years of experience, Munchkin Kat has a wealth of musical knowledge. They cite David Bowie, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, and Lightnin’ Hopkins as their greatest musical influences. Munchkin Kat enjoys a wide range of genres like funk, disco, and blues and combines all of these genres in his current EDM work. The expansive possibilities of electronic music are what attracted Munchkin Kat to the genre. They are able to manipulate an endless array of sounds instead of being tied to one genre of music or instrument. Munchkin Kat’s electronic music takes inspiration from a wide variety of places, like the Solsborne video game soundtracks and newer artists like Opiuo and Mr. Bill.
Munchkin Kat has always been passionate about music. Ten years ago, they started a rock band with their friends while bartending in Brooklyn while working as a software engineer. Munchkin Kat learned a lot from the experience but ultimately found themself looking for a better work-life balance and more freedom in his music creation. Since 2014, Munchkin Kat has become interested in EDM, and blending their two areas of expertise came naturally.
EDM has allowed Munchkin Kat to grow as an artist. They firmly believe that embracing new techniques and sounds is essential for any musical artist. Improving and finding new ways to be creative is what drives Munchkin Kat forward. Electronic music is a young genre that is constantly growing and changing—perfect for Munchkin Kat’s desire to expand their horizons. EDM has also given Munchkin Kat a new level of independence, allowing them to learn rules and break them. The EDM community is very active online, and anyone can create new music anywhere, anytime.
Munchkin Kat’s second album, Ephemera, is set to be released later this year. The album explores the artist’s signature genre-mixing and explores new territories. Three singles from the album, “Break to the,” “Sin to be Rich,” and “High to This,” have already been released and are available to listen to on Spotify. Munchkin Kat continues exploring glitch-hop and mid-tempo bass on their upcoming album.
