Stress Less, Relax More: Life Cocoon’s Bliss Hoodie and AromaPods Perfect for a Lucrative Wellness Market
There is a reason that people keep that one torn, well-worn, battered item of clothing in their closet. They move it from house to house, year after year; typically it’s a t-shirt or a hoodie. Sure, the items have sentimental currency, but more importantly, they provide the wearer with feelings of comfort, security, safety, connection, relaxation and ultimately, well-being.
And who couldn’t use a little more of that in this day and age, especially at a time when 55% of adults report being stressed on a daily basis. Plus 1 in 5 Americans are struggling with a mental health issue, while 970 million people globally are living with a mental disorder like anxiety and depression. Even more alarming, approximately 10.6% or 2.5 million young people report suffering from severe depression while many more are experiencing anxiety and other disorders that have greatly impacted their overall feelings of wellness.
Life Cocoon founder, John Hur, combined his background in biology, entrepreneurship and biotechnology to develop a new way to relax. Its flagship product, The Bliss Hoodie with its patented wellness-treated fabric combines the comfort of that well-worn cotton hoodie with essential oils and CBD in order to help promote feelings of wellness in the wearer. “I take pride in being the first one to develop this kind of apparel,” Hur explains. The hoodies also have a perforated mesh pocket inside the hood to place a patent-pending Aromapod that comes in a number of scents like lavender, rose and eucalyptus. Inserted into hoodie, they provide wearers with a relaxing aromatherapy experience. Hur adds, “It is designed to make you feel like you are relaxing in a spa, regardless of the chaos around you.”
Hur’s holistic care offerings come at the perfect time in a market that is demonstrating solid growth. The global health and wellness market is valued at $5.6 Trillion USD, and it is expected to reach over 8.9 Trillion by 2032. In the United States alone, wellness spending is growing 5% annually and the spend is more than $450 billion.
The impetus for Life Cocoon came from his time back home with his parents during the pandemic shutdown. “I was looking into alternative ways to really help people with their stress and anxiety. And while that was kind of in the back of my mind, I watched my parents really struggle with their small women’s fashion business in the Coachella Valley. They’re Korean immigrants who started the store in the desert, and I grew up in that store just selling clothing to people. Customers were talking about how smelly their masks were, and how it was just irritating to wear those masks all the time. My curiosity was triggered again, and I looked into ways to engineer fabrics. I thought, “It would be really great if people could just experience something that boosts their mood or makes them feel a little bit better through their clothing.’ We wear them all the time, so why not?”
Hur’s Life Cocoon is effectively capitalizing on their B2B and D2C models. In the B2B sector, it is targeting textile manufacturers and developing partnerships with fitness centers, spas, wellness centers and other brands in the wellness space. Hur is also exploring technology licensing. On the D2C front, people can go to their ecommerce site and order their wellness apparel. Home wellness textiles and consumable laundry products are also on their roadmap for the future as well.
“A lot of people are seeing the value from what we’ve created. Like, some people just love the zipper design and licensing opportunities, some just want the design to wear themselves. And we’re really happy and excited to collaborate with other clothing companies or scent companies that want to get involved in this type of new delivery mechanism.”
Life Cocoon’s target market is a vast one. “Everyone loves hoodies,” Hur asserts. “”We have sold out of our first two product drops.” Hur adds, “I’m based in Los Angeles, so early adopters have been people who like yoga and practice meditation. People who are really into aromatherapy and candles love our products as well. It especially appeals to young professional women in Los Angeles. But, our hoodies are really for anybody who is interested in health, wellness and just limiting their stress. A lot of people say you need to limit your stress, but they don’t really give you ways to do it, or it’s hard to control, so you throw on your Bliss hoodie and relax.”
