The Biology of Trauma and Why You Should Care

It’s well known and researched by world-renowned trauma experts that trauma can manifest in the body as a heart attack, cancer and whole host of other conditions, says Dr. Aimie Apigian, a pioneering physician leading the way in trauma-informed medicine.  

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Apigian and she laid out the extensive scientific evidence linking trauma to conditions like autoimmunity, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and much more. She also revealed proven methods for unwinding trauma physiology.

Trauma Rewires Our Biology

Traumatic experiences, especially in early life, reprogram our nervous systems for dysregulation, explains Dr. Apigian. Repeated overwhelm encodes our physiology for chronic stress, immune dysfunction, and inflammation. 

Studies of Holocaust survivors found trauma induced actual changes to their DNA. Even small childhood attachment disruptions can alter our neural wiring to be on constant high alert.

According to Dr. Apigian, this trauma-induced biological shift is the root cause of most chronic and mystery illnesses. Trauma changes our fundamental physiology, driving mind-body disorders.

Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Western medicine excels at acute care, but struggles with chronic disease. Doctors attempt to remove, suppress or manipulate illness symptoms. But leaving trauma physiology unaddressed means symptoms inevitably return.

Talk therapy and medication also fail to resolve trauma biology. We must work directly with the nervous system itself to heal the patterns driving sickness. True healing requires integrating body, mind and spirit.

Reading Our Body’s Signals 

Our bodies communicate through symptoms. Gut issues, pain, inflammation and more are signals of underlyling trauma overload, says Dr. Apigian. We must learn to interpret this body language, rather than ignore it.

She often references Dr. Bessel van der Kolk’s seminal work “The Body Keeps the Score,” which reveals how unresolved trauma embeds in the body. The imprint persists until we provide the safety and connection we lacked.

Stabilizing Before Processing 

Flooding fragile nervous systems with painful emotions often backfires, warns Dr. Apigian. Like stabilizing a patient before surgery, establishing safety is crucial before processing trauma. 

Her programs first focus on stabilization through somatic (body-based) practices. These establish self-regulation to prevent overwhelm during trauma work. 

A Sequential Healing Journey

Dr. Apigian’s step-by-step trauma healing journey starts by resolving the nervous system “freeze” response. Next, suppressed grief is released, especially through breathing. 

Core attachment wounds are then rewired through somatic exercises. Fight/flight energy is completed and stressors reduced before finally shifting from healing to living.

Each stage builds on the previous, methodically untangling us from the knots of trauma physiology. Light bulbs go off as the precise sequence unfolds.

From Surviving to Thriving

Profound healing happens when we release the need to “fix” ourselves and instead follow our passions and purpose, says Dr. Apigian. Sensitivity becomes insight. Overwhelm turns into inspiration. Isolation transforms into service.

Trauma recovery is a lifelong journey of growth and self-actualization. We shift from merely surviving to thriving and living boldly. The expansive possibilities excite and inspire.

Empowering Self-Healing

Critically, Dr. Apigian aims to empower self-healing. We must become experts in our own nervous systems. As we tune into our symptoms, we learn to nurture ourselves through the practices she provides.

No condition is impossible to overcome, declares Dr. Apigian. Her programs offer hope, tools and proof that radical healing lies within reach when we align with our body’s wisdom.
