Women Who Disrupt

The Journey to Loving Myself: Why I didn’t think I deserved to win Project Runway

Ashley Nell Tipton is a San Diego local who won Season 14 of Project Runway as the first plus-size designer. Ashley is known for her line at JC Penney and creating plus-size clothing for women around the world.

What is your backstory?

Growing up it was hard to find clothing that fit and was stylish! My grandma taught me how to sew so I quickly learned I needed to create plus size outfits that fit full-figured women including myself. I also struggled with self-confidence and believing in myself. It took a lot of work to love myself!

What is one of your proudest moments?

Winning Season 14 of Project Runway. Also, launching a plus-size clothing line for JC Penney. The biggest accomplishment and success I’ve had is the ability to love myself and encourage others to practice self-love as well. We will be coming out with a YouTube channel on exactly this topic!

What was a defining moment in your career?

After winning Project Runway I was so unhappy. I really believed that I didn’t deserve to win. I fell into a depression and couldn’t appreciate all the success that I created. I finally started doing some critical thinking and life coaching work with my Manager Andrew. This self-love work helped me rewire how I think about myself and others. My favorite quote is “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?” By Rupaul.

What is your daily routine like?

Work out, eat healthily, have a few team meetings, balancing creativity with processes, spending time with loved ones, and making decisions that make ME happy; even if others don’t agree with my decisions.

What excites you the most about your business right now?

Teaching others what self-love is and how to make changes in your life for the better. Empowering others and helping guide those who are in need.

I am teaching people to do things that make YOU happy!

What does the word DISRUPT mean to you?

Don’t do what others “expect” you to do. Do things that you want to do.
