The Perfect Fit: Why Couples Should Consider Custom Engagement Rings

For generations, the engagement ring tradition has followed a familiar script. A hopeful partner, usually the man, ventures into a jewellery store, navigates rows of pre-designed rings, and selects the one that best fits the couple’s budget and — what he assumes are — their preferences.

By all means, there’s intention and care in such an effort — which is what the process should represent. Yet, one could also argue that something is missing. Something more…unique.

This yearning for uniqueness is partly why couples are increasingly opting for a more personal approach – crafting a custom engagement ring. But this trend goes beyond just one occasion. It reflects a broader cultural shift towards self-expression, personalization, and sustainability. From bespoke suits to curated experiences, consumers crave products that speak to their individuality and, more and more, steer clear of the mass-produced norm.

Jonathan Goldberg, founder and CEO of Kimberfire, a Canadian leader in custom engagement rings, sheds light on the rising demand for customization: “With custom engagement rings, clients aren’t limited to what everyone else is buying,” he explains. “Custom allows our clients to chart their path, whether personalising the width of the band or creating an entirely new design.”

According to Goldberg, it is often the case that couples have actually found a ring they like at a store but want to change one or two things, such as specific diamond shapes or prong styles. But for that, the usual This is what we made, this is how you’ll buy it approach offered by most jewellers doesn’t cut it. Instead, they seek a “This is what you want, this is how we’ll make it”.

Still, the words “custom” or “bespoke” carry a negative connotation; one synonymous with “expensive.” Goldberg debunks this myth: “People don’t always think about the layers of markups in shopping the typical retail brands, and they incorrectly assume that if it is off the shelf, then it will cost less.”

Sure, the cost of a ring will depend on the brand, design, and store. But when taking the custom route, couples can work directly with jewellers to find stones and settings that fit their budget — rather than focusing on the tag. This transparency and control empower them to make informed decisions without compromising on quality or sentiment. “Clients never pay for a single diamond they don’t need, or a millimetre of extra metal they don’t want,” Goldberg emphasizes.

That’s not all, however. As it turns out, one more misconception often prevents couples from choosing a bespoke alternative: the process itself. Many think customizing a ring will be difficult, long, and intricate. And maybe it would. But that’s why jewellers specialized in custom rings, like Kimberfire, have expert consultants on their team.

Acting as the client’s point of contact from start to finish, the consultant answers all their questions, gives suggestions, and educates them on diamond cuts, gemstones, and design possibilities. They then pass the idea on to the designer, who creates a 3D model of the ring, guaranteeing a clear preview and flawless fit.

“Whether they know what they are looking for or not, we walk our clients through a well-thought-out and transparent process, presenting all the decisions and options they need to consider when creating their rings,” says Goldberg. “If you are working with someone who listens to you and knows what they are doing, the process can actually be straightforward and fun.”

Indeed, this personalized experience is what many couples are after: they want to know they have played a large part in making the final product what it is. This comprehensive approach equips them with the knowledge to make informed decisions and feel confident in their final selection.

That said, this confidence also hinges on where the product comes from. Today’s couples no longer measure the ring’s worth solely on the diamond size. They want to use ethically sourced, conflict-free gemstones, and many prioritize fair labour practices and environmentally conscious mining as well.

This is yet another benefit of the custom alternative: it allows for greater transparency about the origin of the diamond and the ring’s manufacturing process, giving couples peace of mind that their ring represents not only their love but also their values.

In practice, Goldberg says this means sourcing their diamonds and gemstones from “highly regarded cutters and distributors, who assure us of their ethical origin,” and carrying out the manufacturing “on-site with direct oversight by our sales and management teams, ensuring sustainable and ethical practices are always followed.”

Along the lines of personalization, Goldberg also hints at continuous innovation, not just in design but also in the buying experience. “We currently meet with our clients virtually, utilizing our proprietary custom jewellery design software, which we are constantly developing.” This dedication to technological advancements ensures a seamless and convenient process for couples. And, more often than not, cuts down costs.

Ultimately, though, the allure of custom engagement rings goes beyond aesthetics. The very act of creating a ring together becomes a bonding experience for couples — perhaps their very first shared project. “When you purchase a custom engagement ring, it is literally made for you,” says Goldberg. “You can add personal and meaningful touches, from birthstones to initials incorporated into the design itself.”

In that sense, the rise of custom engagement rings signals a shift towards prioritizing love and partnership over societal expectations. But this trend isn’t about rejecting tradition altogether. Instead, it’s about embracing the opportunity to create a symbol of love as unique and enduring as the bond it represents.

As Goldberg aptly concludes, “There is no better way to purchase an engagement ring that is ideally suited to you and lasts a lifetime. Custom does not mean more expensive; it simply means a high-quality ring made just for you.”
