The Pros & Cons Of A VPN

If you have a remote office you want secure and safe information from prying eyes, you should look into a VPN. We will go over the pros and cons of VPNs so you can decide if this is a good option for you.

How A VPN Works

VPN is short for Virtual Private Network. This connection is encrypted and private between two computers or a computer and a smart device.  In this case, the computer is the server. Your device uses the server’s information to browse the internet instead of its real network information.  Any site trying to track your data will only see the VPN’s server information, not yours.

The Advantages

VPNs are perfect for remote places of work where employees can use them to have a safe and secure connection with their place of business’ computer.Using the best VPN solution for enterprises ensures that customers’ and companies’ data will be as safe as possible, even when working from home. Essential Benefits Of Using VPNs For Work & At Home

There are many websites for entertainment that have content that is only accessible to specific regions. Using a VPN will make it easy for your connection to appear to be coming from that specific region. You can enjoy your favorite entertainment no matter where you are actually located.

Using a VPN will disguise your network data making it seem to be coming from a different location. The VPN will keep you safe from those looking to grab valuable information and will be inaccessible to unwanted sources.

Businesses need internet safety more than ever before. Since COVID, more and more people are working from home meaning sensitive data is at a much higher risk of theft.

Wide-open access to company and customer information can be devastating to a business.  Using a VPN to connect to a business network will help protect sensitive data by hiding it behind false information offered by the VPN.

When you are shopping online for airline tickets or hotels, these places will track customers’ network information to increase sales and prices. Some vendors will charge different prices depending on a specific region. If you have a VPN, you can hide your location allowing you to see offers unaffected by these underhanded pricing tactics.

Today, there are many more security solutions but many software and firewalls can be very expensive and might cause more problems than what you are trying to prevent. By using a VPN, you can steer clear of licensing fees or monthly charges. Although a VPN will not scan for viruses or block intruders from trying to connect to your computer, it will prevent the need for other features by making you invisible. Nefarious people will not be able to get into your network if they believe your system is a good many miles away in another country.

If you use a VPN for gaming, you might have some other advantages. This includes protection from DDoS attacks or angry gamers who want to get access to your home network. The region-free capabilities of using a VPN means you could choose which servers to use when playing games and could improve your connection speeds in some cases. Also, some gaming titles are not available in some regions but with a VPN, you will have access to those games.

The Disadvantages

Before starting, there is no doubt the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages.

Because a VPN takes a certain amount of bandwidth, it will slow down connection speeds. This, in turn, can limit how fast your connection through the VPN will be. The upside, these issues are becoming less as VPN services are improving.

There are eCommerce sites using software known as VPN Blockers. These blockers work to identify and prevent people using VPNs. Sites that require users to register accounts before use and can store account information like usernames and email addresses and store this information on a list of your common IP addresses. Should a website notice you are using an IP from and different location, they may restrict or block your access.

Setting up a VPN is very important,  if not set it up properly, it can cause leaks. Leaking information can happen if a VPN is not configured correctly. These leaks will draw the attention of unwanted parties so it’s critical to understand your VPN provider’s operating procedures before using them.

Another problem,  the VPN will drop the connection. When that happens your network and information ID will be displayed for all to see. Others will see what sites have been visiting and if any of these sites violate ISP terms of service, they could shut down your connection immediately.
