The Ultimate Guide to Daith Piercings

Published

on

Piercings help us curate a stylish look to express our individualities — many people choose to get a daith piercing because of this piercing’s growing popularity and unique placement. Typical earrings became popular thousands of years ago, so the creation of daith earrings in 1992 (exactly twenty years ago!) gave jewelry lovers a contemporary ear-piercing flattering on everyone. Here’s everything you need to know about this popular ear piercing and how to style it:

What Is a Daith Piercing?

Daith piercings were invented twenty years ago when a professional piercer named Erik Dakota collaborated with a Jewish client who wanted an ear piercing that was new and unique. They decided to pierce the innermost (and smallest) fold of cartilage in the ear — found directly where the inner ear above the ear canal touches the outer ridge of the ear. You’ll know when you’re looking at a piece of daith jewelry because these pieces look like they’re coming out of the ear canal.

Erik and his client decided to name their newfound piercing the daith, derived from the word da’at, the Hebrew word for knowledge. You’ve now read the word daith several times, so how do you think it’s pronounced? Most people get the pronunciation wrong (even some of the world’s best piercers). It’s not pronounced like the word faith — it’s actually pronounced like moth or goth.

What’s the Healing Time for a Daith Piercing?

While most ear piercings can take anywhere from one to three months, cartilage piercings (including the daith) take a bit longer to heal completely. You should expect to wait six to twelve months for your daith piercing to fully heal.

We know what you’re thinking, but the recovery time isn’t as bad as it sounds. The piercing will hurt less as time goes on — just like any other piercing! Your daith piercing jewelry may cause some tenderness, redness, or discomfort throughout the healing process. Here’s the good news: after a few months, the only thing you’ll notice is how stunning your daith jewelry looks. It’s so worth it!

What Size Hoops Fit In a Daith Piercing?

Daith piercings are typically created with a 16 gauge needle, so you’ll find that most daith jewelry pieces are 16 gauge and 1.2 mm thick. The typical daith piercing hoops include the Rainbow Daith Hoop and Pearl Daith Earrings & Sun And Moon Hoop from Erica Jewels Toronto.

What Jewelry Material Is Safe for a Daith Piercing?

It’s essential to be mindful of your jewelry’s material, but it’s especially important to get quality material for your daith piercings. Since daith piercings are placed in such a sensitive area of the ear, it’s best to use material good for sensitive skin. The most popular jewelry materials for daith piercings are 316L stainless steel, titanium, and gold.

What Kind of Jewelry Should I Use for a Daith Piercing?

Hoops are the most popular jewelry placed inside daith piercings! Hoops look fantastic in this part of the ear, but curved barbells are also becoming common in daith piercings.

When Can I Change My Daith Piercing Jewelry?

Most piercers recommend that you wait at least four months before changing your jewelry. There are undoubtedly tempting pieces of daith jewelry that may catch your eye, but it’s recommended that you hold off on placing them in your ear until the four-month mark to avoid any unwanted bacteria getting inside. You shouldn’t interfere with the healing process — you’ll risk your piercing getting infected if you change it too early.

You can change your daith piercing jewelry when the skin around your piercing is no longer red or sore. Please also make sure no fluids or crust are coming out of your piercing before changing your original piercing. The idea is that your piercing should be healed before changing the jewelry. It can be tempting to change out your earring earlier, but you know what they say — good things come to those who wait.

Do Daith Piercings Cause Migraines?

There’s a lot of discussion surrounding daith piercings and their association with migraines. While some people who suffer from migraines say they’ve experienced fewer after receiving a daith piercing (maybe because the area is often treated during acupuncture), there is currently no scientific evidence that daith piercings help migraines.

There isn’t enough scientific evidence to indicate that daith piercings cause migraines, either. Daith jewelry is placed in the firm cartilage of the helix — so it may cause more discomfort than the average piercing, but this type of piercing won’t cause a migraine.

How Should I Take Care of a Daith Piercing?

Just like any other new piercing, you should begin with cleaning your daith piercing every day. Experts recommend cleaning your piercing with a sterile saline solution once in the morning and once at night.

Environmental factors could negatively affect your daith piercings, so it’s important to be mindful of how often you’re touching your piercing and the products used around that area of your body. You should avoid touching your piercing unless you’re cleaning it! Even further, you may want to wash it with warm water at the end of your shower to ensure any residual product left from your hair or skin care routine did not get caught in the piercing.

Why You Should Consider a Daith Piercing

Daith piercings are one of the most stylish ear piercings in 2022! If you’re thinking about getting multiple ear piercings, you should take the time to carefully curate a look that best fits your personal aesthetic. Daith piercings are fantastic because they complement other piercings around the ear! If you’re looking to elevate your look with a piece of jewelry that’ll be a talking piece for years to come, the daith piercing may be the perfect fit for you.
