Thulasiram Govinda Chettiyar’s Dance Odyssey
From software to the spotlight, this visionary dancer, yoga guru, and choreographer is making waves in multiple industries.
Dance is an ancient form of artistic expression. It can be a form of communication, telling powerful stories; it can speak to deep emotions; it can bring people together. It has been constantly evolving since the beginning of civilization, and one vibrant Indian yoga instructor, dancer, and software genius is taking that evolution to the next level.
Welcome to the transformative journey of Thulasiram Govinda Chettiyar. His career began with the structured world of software engineering in India; now he’s lighting up stages across the US, with a base in Dallas, Texas.
Introduction
Thulasiram – who goes by Thulsi – is dancer, choreographer, yoga instructor, and the founder of Team Ground Zero Dance, a DFW metroplex-based performing arts company. He has a long list of accolades and TV appearances; and he’s been featured in a wide range of publications, including Shoutout DFW, Voyage Dallas, CanvasRebel Magazine, and more.
But in the beginning, there was software. Thulsi was working in a prestigious role at a major software company in India. It was stable; predictable; and financially sound. But it was also far removed from the beats and rhythms that truly moved his soul. The turning point came when an opportunity to teach yoga in Vietnam presented itself, courtesy of an old friend. Despite having a secure career, Thulasiram was drawn to the world of yoga and performance arts – a passion that had been simmering within him for years.
Taking this leap was not easy. Departing from a well-established career path to venture into the uncertain world of dance and yoga required courage – and a significant shift in mindset. Thulsi had to start from scratch, at a time when his peers were settling into their careers. This bold move was driven by a deep-seated belief – a “now or never” attitude – that propelled him into the unknown.
“My initial transition definitely had its challenges,” Thulsi shares. “Leaving a lucrative software job at home in India to teach yoga in Vietnam – people called me crazy! But it was the first step in an adventure toward my true passion. And once I relocated to the US, my journey took a turn for the better.”
Thulsi’s unique style, a fusion of South Indian dance forms and hip-hop, began to gain attention. This fresh blend added a novel dimension to the cultural landscape of the United States, and he soon began to rise as a notable figure in the dance community.
In 2018, Thulasiram’s artistic endeavors took a huge leap forward with the founding of Team Ground Zero (TGZ) in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. TGZ was a new kind of dance team; it was a manifestation of Thulsi’s vision – a vibrant, energetic group that brought together diverse dance styles and cultures. The team’s success was almost immediate, as they reached the finale of the prestigious Dance USA Dance competition, and their talent was seen for the first time on the global stage.
Then Thulsi had a chance to move from being a spectator to an active participant in theater arts: his involvement with the Think India Foundation and MainStage further expanded his horizons. Participating in plays like “Red Pashmina” and “Royal Dilemma,” he showcased his dance skills as well as his versatility as a performer. These productions, known for their grand scale and intricate storytelling, provided Thulsi with a platform to reach wider audiences and further solidify his place in the artistic community.
“But here again, a new transition meant new obstacles,” Thulsi reflects. “I know it was a bold decision to move from software development into yoga – and then into dance and theater. It meant leaving behind financial security and venturing into an industry where success is never guaranteed. Also, I was the breadwinner of my household, so I was defying both societal norms and my own family’s expectations – but I found unwavering and loving support from my partner, Lydia, who stood by me, encouraging me to follow my dreams.”
And that’s exactly what he’s done – and he has defied the odds and risen to greatness. And he is still succeeding. Thulsi’s career is a shining example of the power of determination and the pursuit of one’s true calling. It takes a massively different set of skills to do everything he has done – developing software, creating choreographed dances, performing live, and teaching. But he has worn his many hats with ease.
“The risks I have taken – the challenges I’ve overcome – have shaped me as an artist and as an individual,” Thulsi shares.
Today, Thulasiram continues to innovate and inspire. He is actively involved in various dance initiatives, theater productions, and cultural events. His work, characterized by a fusion of styles and an emphasis on cultural unity, has garnered acclaim both in the United States and abroad. Thulsi remains a dedicated advocate for the arts, using his talents to entertain, educate, and bring people together.
Conclusion
Thulasiram Govinda Chettiyar managed to reinvent himself – something few people will ever have the chance to do successfully. From writing code to dazzling in the dance spotlight, he has lived his life with passion and adaptability. His career is a reminder that the path to fulfillment often requires leaving the comfort of the known for the exhilaration of the unknown.
“I encourage everyone to embrace your passions, take risks, and believe in the extraordinary possibilities that life has to offer,” Thulsi urges. That’s what he’s done – and as he dances his way through life, he leaves an indelible mark on the world of dance, proving that the rhythm of passion knows no bounds.
