Unveiling the Business Landscape of Dubai: A Glimpse into the 2024 Harvard Association for Law & Business International Trek
The vibrant city of Dubai served as the dynamic backdrop for the 6th Annual International Trek by the Harvard Association for Law & Business (HALB). A select group of students embarked on a week-long exploration (March 11th-16th, 2024) designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the unique legal and business environment of the United Arab Emirates.
The itinerary offered unparalleled access to a diverse range of companies, fostering insightful interactions with industry titans. The trek commenced at the prestigious Gibson Dunn offices, where students engaged in stimulating discussions with partners like Marwan Elaraby. These dialogues shed light on the burgeoning business landscape of the Middle East, equipping participants with a comprehensive understanding of the region’s growth potential.

The program extended beyond the confines of boardrooms, offering a taste of Emirati culture. A captivating desert safari transported students back in time, allowing them to experience traditional travel modes, immerse themselves in the region’s rich music and sporting heritage, and gain a deeper appreciation for Ramadan customs.

The following day saw the group delve into the intricacies of the oil and gas sector with a visit to Dynamic Drilling. Executives, including Mr. Naresh Kumar and Manal Kumar Agarwal, shared valuable insights into their recent acquisition of offshore rigs and the company’s strategic focus on Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Mexico. This exclusive encounter provided aspiring legal and business professionals with invaluable career advice gleaned from the experiences of industry veterans.

Subsequently, students had the privilege of interacting with partners and associates from both the corporate and litigation practices of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s Dubai office. These interactions offered a unique perspective on the diverse career paths that lead to success in international law firms.
Emirates, the iconic airline synonymous with luxury travel, served as the next stop on the itinerary. Here, students engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with legal counsel, gaining a nuanced understanding of the legal and business complexities of the aviation industry.

The program culminated with a visit to Siemens Energy, where students explored the intricate workings of the company’s legal and compliance departments. The Dubai International Trek concluded with a visit to the breathtaking Burj Khalifa, a fitting finale to an enriching and unforgettable experience.
Saeed Ahmad, a board member who organized the 2024 Dubai Trek noted how, “Our visits spanned Siemens Energy, Mashreq Corporate & Investment Banking Group, Emirates, Dynamic Drilling, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, & Gibson Dunn, and consisted of interactive presentations and discussions on subjects such as compliance, government relations, legal, employment opportunities, and more.”
