Author Susan Clawson Takes Readers on a Tempestuous 45-day Foot Journey with Survivors From a Deadly Virus in Her Five-Book Series, the ‘better lands’
The year 2020 is an unforgettable period in human history as the COVID-19 global health pandemic disrupted the entire world. Mandated lockdowns went into effect worldwide as governments tried to contain the continued spread of the virus. Confined to the four walls of their homes, many people sought a creative outlet for their boredom. While some found solace on social media platforms, Susan Clawson retreated to her long-time passion for writing and crafted the literary masterpiece ‘better lands’, a five-book dystopian, drama series.
Aptly titled better lands, the main focus is not on the virus and its destruction but is a classic, fictional, yet realistic story about human resilience after two-thirds of the world’s breathing population and most infrastructure was wiped out by a couple of back-to-back virus strands. Initially set in Vermont on Lake Champlain, surrounded by the majestic green mountains and forested natural beauty, the story follows the journey of 16-year-old Rosa Wells as she leads a group of pandemic survivors on a 45-day tempestuous foot journey from Vermont to Kentucky’s inland peninsula in search of virus-free lands.
Thrust into the reign of leadership at such a young age, Rosa convinces others to embark on the questionable journey, where they learn to trust and depend on each other to survive in an environment which they had little or no control over. Among the new friendships, disloyalties develop leading to controversies, violence, and even death. A new hope emerges as the survivors set foot on the better lands, yet the group faces new challenges that are both jubilant and life-threatening.
The story comes with graphic descriptions that are really relatable to past, current, and future environmental-human encountered disasters. The ‘better lands’ series is a real page-turner for lovers of dystopian, apocalyptic drama. It will leave the reader wondering what they would do if faced with similar circumstances. Without a doubt, the story is exciting, suspenseful, captivating, and relevant.
“Because of what our world has recently been through and what may lie ahead in the future, it certainly makes one think about what we would do if we were thrust into something similar. In some small way, maybe it can help us prepare and understand that we can survive as long as we stay resilient. After all, we’ve done it for centuries,” Susan explained.
After Susan Clawson published her first book during the height of the pandemic, books two and three followed shortly thereafter. The authentic flavor of her writing transports readers into a realistic dystopian world where they can feel the trials and triumphs of the characters as if they were their own. This writing talent has carried the author to the top of the literary charts. The first book of the five-book series, ‘THE DISCOVERIES’ is under film adaptation. Currently, Susan is working on the last two books of the series, which will be ready for publication soon.
When she is not writing and taking readers on adventures, she enjoys the outdoors, loves shopping, occasionally travels around the New England area, and enjoys cruises with her husband. On top of that, she works part-time recruiting and training reps across the country for a financial firm and spends time tending to her two collector dollhouses.
