Birthing Ideas: Kaleem Joy’s Midwifery Approach to Creativity

In a world that often stifles creativity and discourages us from pursuing our dreams, Kaleem Joy, a seasoned midwife and visionary advocate, offers a refreshing and empowering perspective. Drawing from her extensive experience guiding families through the transformative journey of childbirth, Kaleem has developed a unique approach that reveals the parallels between giving birth to a child and birthing an idea or vision. With a contagious enthusiasm and a deep understanding of the human potential for growth and transformation, Kaleem invites us to reimagine the process of conceiving, gestating, and delivering our greatness into the world.

Share with us a little bit about your background and what inspired you to apply to speak at TEDxFolsom?

I’ve been a midwife since the late 90’s providing primary maternity care, inspiring families one baby (or two in the case of twins) at a time, to embrace the most transformative experience of their lives. Walking with them month by month along their journey, I noticed the importance of addressing their whole life instead of just their physical wellbeing. I saw a greatness in them emerging, both in the baby growing and in them as people. Whole life care promoted a positive healthy outcome in their birth, baby and adjustment to parenthood. This sparked an awareness in me of the similarities of how we create and achieve other areas of our lives beyond pregnancy. I desired a wider global reach to motivate and inspire a positive outcome for more people. This prompted founding and creating Natural Childbirth 101 education and coaching. It is dedicated to parents-to-be, student midwives and people ready to empower and transform their lives.

Without giving away too much – Can you provide a short summary of what your topic for Reimagine is about?

Within each of us lives a “greatness”, the ability to bring to life something impactful like an idea. Often we can doubt, fear or worry about the ability to achieve in life. There was a moment in time when we ourselves. were an idea. We were conceived, gestated, given birth to and parented in one way or another. Our parents also were growing into a new more expanded expression of who they were becoming.  Let’s reimagine giving birth to an idea using the same tried and true roadmap of our own existence. Walking through the biological patterns, discovering the step by step roadmap and alleviating fear while building confidence for success.

What was your inspiration or reflection point for generating this idea that was worth spreading?

During our 25 year midwifery practice, we averaged a 97% success rate of parents giving birth to healthy babies at home.  Since the US hospital statistics are 1 in 3 babies born by cesarean surgery, I was curious to discover what was creating the difference. The areas of claiming ownership, willing to embrace change, navigating the new life with calm confidence ,was a consistent pattern of growth. The idea emerged to use the same patterns which created the success for childbearing years and apply them to any idea we would love to bring to life.

What are you looking forward to most with your talk?

The joy of seeing people connect to their own unique greatness, expressed as an idea and recognizing the proven simple yet essential steps to achieving it. To ignite in people a belief in themselves again and walk into the uncomfortable unknown willing to transform. Trusting in change, growth and expansion as the perfect path to bring their idea to life.

To gather as a community of people who are craving the new and innovative ideas we are sharing and to connect with those whose ideas are taking flight.

How do you foresee your TEDxFolsom talk impacting viewers both locally and globally?

People throughout the world will come to know there is greatness in them and in their ideas. They can then conceive, grow, birth and parent them into reality. As they take hold and integrate the simple yet powerful roadmap to achieving their idea, they will grow a greater version of who they really are.  Parents of children and parents of an idea, are forming the next generation of leaders of nations, inventors, musicians, artists, advocates of global peace and future parents.

If there is one nugget of information you want someone to walk away with that view’s your TEDx Talk, what would that be?

There is greatness in all of us which we can express with an idea we conceive, gestate, birth and parent with the will to change and transform into an expanded life, full of impact.
