$250,000 in Student Loan Debt
Medical school often comes with both prestige and sadly, hundreds of thousands of dollars in student debt. The costs associated with a pursuing a degree in medicine have continued to rise at an alarming rate, outpacing inflation. This has led to many students having to drop out of school due to a lack of financial means to complete their education or graduating with hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. Studies have shown that the cost of attending medical school has risen considerably every year over the past 10 years. The Dr. Suhyun An Scholarship hopes to relieve some of the financial burden facing these students by addressing one of the biggest issues they’ll encounter, heads on.
A 2021 study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics found that the total student loan debt taken on by students attending medical school has increased by 97% since 2000, with the average amount owed upon graduation being in excess of $251,000. Some attribute the rising costs of education to developments in technology, studies, treatments, and medications. This is a known fact, and unfortunately the issue is only exacerbated for those in medical school. This is a serious problem now, and it will only continue to grow for the next generation. We need to support these young men and women because they are actively dedicating their lives not only to caring for others, but to developing the future treatments and medications that may save countless lives,” Dr. Suhyun An said while commenting on the average medical school student graduating with roughly a quarter million dollars in student loan debt.

The Dr. Suhyun An Scholarship awards $2,000 to 2 students annually. These students are those who have shown a commitment to academic excellence by possessing a minimum weighted GPA of 3.0 while in pursuit of a career in the medical field. Applicants are also required to present 2 academic or professional references, as well as submit a 500 to 800 word essay detailing why they are pursuing an education and career in the medical field.
