How Kendrick Tilghman Aims to Diversify the STEM Workforce

Recent statistics of STEM jobs in the USA depict the uneven representation of different ethnic groups and genders. Higher education suggests America has yet to make efforts on increasing diversity in fields of science. Lack of diversity in science is a social dilemma and urgent steps are required to cultivate talent and promote inclusion of all races in fields of science and technology like engineering and mathematics. People from backgrounds that are commonly underrepresented must be provided proper representation as it is the first step to just true inclusion but is crucial for the development of the human race.

Kendrick Tilghman is a STEM DJ based in Baltimore which is an African-American majority area. Kendrick understands how a lack of diversity in STEM would result in lesser discoveries and a lack of solutions to social issues. Without diversity, harnessing the full potential of STEM is impossible.

Kendrick is an Electrical Engineering and MBA degree holder. He founded his company 5 Starr Enterprise in 2010, with the aim to make it the top resource for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M) workforce diversity in the USA. his company plays a tremendous role in educating and empowering communities to play active roles in STEM-related curricula. He provides the foundation that will be able to generate greater opportunities in advanced education training and thus contribute to a diverse workforce.

He founded a nonprofit called the B.E. M.O.R.E. S.T.E.M. Foundation Inc., which stands for Bringing Everyone More Opportunities and Relevant Experiences in S.T.E.M. The focus of the initiative is to help foster creative thinking in young minds that increases academic performance and also generates a wider interest in fields of STEM. The methods he uses are engaging and innovative. As he is a DJ by profession, he includes music and media as a means to educate and make learning things that are normally thought to be highly boring, far more exciting and fun. The company uses Math Thru Music kits and JayD Coding Kit to provide STEM education in a fun-filled manner.

The company also conducts engaging workshops, seminars, and programs in not just the state of Maryland but across the entire United States of America. His tremendous efforts to promote diversity in STEM and edutainment are truly noteworthy.

You can get to know more about 5 Starr Enterprise on the company website and follow Kendrick’s IG profile for the latest updates on his work, life, and business.
