Luke Damant, The 20-Year Old Disruptor Leading A New Generation Of Travel Vloggers

Luke Damant is a 20-year old from Sydney, Australia who has visited 15 countries throughout his lifetime. After having made the decision 12 months ago to travel full-time, he was quick to monetize his passion through vlogging his adventures, quickly building a following of close to 500k across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.
Luke has always been wired for success from a young age, working 60-hour weeks as a Removalist straight after completing high school. While many of his peers were busy engaging in social activities in their spare time, Luke spent his time laying the bricks of his Entrepreneurial empire from the age of 17, selling second hand items on eBay and running a delivery business on Friday and Saturday nights. As his love for Entrepreneurship grew, he quickly began to lose interest in other activities he knew weren’t beneficial for his future
I had the privilege of interviewing Luke to ask him 5 quick-fire questions, gaining a great insight into the mind of a Gen-Z’er.
“What inspired you to begin to travel the world at such a young age?“
“When I was 17 and 18, I would watch hours of YouTube videos every day of these amazing people exploring new cultures and experiencing new things around the world. At this time, my life in Sydney was very repetitive and I was itching to get out and explore every corner of the earth and experience things I had never seen before. I thought to myself “If they can do it, why can’t I?”. When I first left Sydney on May 6th 2019, I knew that I was going to become a travel Blogger and live a life that I am happy with”.
“Can you share the most interesting story that has happened to you on your travels?”
“When I blew up my hand in Kerala, India. I had just arrived in India 2 days prior for the 2nd time and I was celebrating a festival called Diwali with some local YouTubers I had just met. We were setting off fireworks and crackers in celebration of the Festival of Lights. Unfortunately, I lit a dodgy firework and it blew up instantly in my right hand. I was in shock and when I looked down at my hands to see bones and blood exposed I thought I was dreaming. My friends rushed me to the hospital where I stayed for the next 14 days and I underwent 2 surgeries, ultimately losing my middle finger and half of my index finger. It was a crazy experience, and I believe it helped shape who I am today. It made SO grateful for everything I have in life and it completely shifted my mindset for the better.”
“What trend do you see happening with Gen Z and the way they make a living as opposed to previous generations?”
“A big trend I have noticed with Gen-Z in comparison to other generations is their ability to go for high-risk, high-reward careers. We are living in new times that do not require the traditional forms of education and my generation is capitalizing on the opportunities that social media has to offer. In previous generations it was a necessity to go to University and complete a degree whereas in this current era I am seeing a lot of people take on risk and create a career that they are happy with and something they enjoy doing”
“What is your favourite life quote that you live by and why?”
“Chase Your Dreams”. It is something I say at the end of every video and I even have it tattooed on me. I believe that every human is capable of so much more than we believe and by maintaining a positive mindset and working hard towards our goals, everybody can chase their dreams. It is my goal in life to benefit others in chasing their dreams and ultimately live a life that they are happy with.”
“You have achieved a great amount of success on TikTok already (274k followers in under a year). What are your thoughts around this platform for Entrepreneurs?”
“I love TikTok! It is single-handedly the most beneficial app for Entrepreneurs and businesses looking for growth. I have been a big fan of Tik Tok since late last year and I believe the organic exposure that comes with TikTok is a great way for new users to find your content. One of my videos has over 20 million views which is unheard of on any other form of social media. I think there are a lot of people that are missing out on the opportunities this platform has to offer.”
