Robert Towle’s Journey to Founding New River Solutions
Robert started his career in finance and moved his way up the corporate ladder to being a controller, regional CFO and company CFO. During his time, he worked with large corporations like Hewlett-Packard and others across the globe.
After gaining a very respectable amount of experience in the field, he joined a firm working as a management consultant in 2012. Robert enjoyed the work immensely and gained more exposure to the financial situations of businesses worldwide. Unfortunately, about six years later, Robert was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Not knowing if he would survive the removal of the apple-sized growth, he took the chance and underwent surgery. During his recovery, he realized he could have a much more significant impact on the world by opening his own consulting firm. He pondered the idea and was finally pushed by the machinations of a co-worker to leave the firm and go out on his own.
Robert Towle: Principles to Run a Business By
Throughout Robert’s life, his experiences inside and outside of the workplace had always pointed to the need for adaptability, flexibility and resilience. He shares many of these stories in his first book, “Don’t Be Dumb,” and his second and soon-to-be-published book, “Embark!”
Each story carries a valuable lesson that can be tied into every aspect of business. Robert uses these three basic principles in conjunction with his years of experience as a finance executive to enhance the operations of companies he works with today. Robert explained, “while working onsite with Hewlett-Packard’s Puerto Rican operations, I learned the criticality of taking a global view for improving operations. The result of that transition in thinking led to one of my earliest business transformation efforts, moving finance functions to Guadalajara, Mexico.”
When meeting with clients, he listens carefully to their needs and timelines and works “to really understand the need, address that need and then the partnership grows from there,” shared Robert.
One example included “working alongside a team in Sri Lanka; we took the initiative to ensure they also provided offshore support for the Latin American staff in Spanish.”
New River Solutions is also flexible with smaller businesses. For example, Robert was approached by a company that wanted to scale. He recommended a business plan and six months of advisory services. Unfortunately, the full package was financially out of reach for the company, and because Robert wanted to see them do well, he agreed to provide advisory services alone that provide them support.
In addition, New River Solutions will never pretend to be something they are not. When a problem comes up that they are not equipped for, they bring in outside resources to fill the gap, and never leave clients hanging.
All in all, New River Solutions is a comprehensive service that stands behind their work and their word. Robert is extremely knowledgeable and enjoys seeing businesses and entrepreneurs succeed with his expert help. In fact, Robert recently reconnected with a past client that gave him credit for the success and continued growth of his most recent out of 14 attempts to launch a business.
