Pack a self-storage unit like a pro

Renting a storage unit is a great solution when you need extra room to house some of your belongings, whether you’re relocating, decluttering, or storing your child’s toys. When you own a storage unit, your first instinct is to shove all the things you want to get rid of the house inside and lock the door. But it’s not as simple as forgetting about them because there’ll come a moment when you need some of them, and you don’t want to waste time searching for the impossible jigsaw. When you neglect to pack your items in a storage unit properly, you risk being damaged. On the other hand, if you fill your storage unit properly and pay attention to some professional recommendations, you can fit more things in the same place and save time and money in the long run.

Here are some recommendations on packing a storage space like a pro

Gather all things before starting to pack

Ensure that you gather all the belongings you want to remove from your house in the same place to figure out what supplies you need. Depending on your items, you would use plastic or cardboard boxes, packaging accessories, and protective equipment like dust sheets and bubble wrap. After placing each item in its designated box, get a padlock and head to your unit. Even if California storage units are safe and secure facilities, you still need a padlock to secure your rental space.

Use the proper boxes

When it comes to packing your items for housing them in a storage unit, using high-quality boxes makes the difference between well-preserved and damaged goods. Don’t use second-hand cardboard boxes because they may feature damage and fail to protect your belongings properly. New cardboard boxes are affordable and easy to put together. If you notice any damp or leaks inside the storage unit, use plastic boxes because they offer better protection. If possible, use the same sized boxes to stack them and prevent toppling accidents easily.

Pack the boxes the right way

Even if it’s an obvious piece of advice, you must ensure that you place heavier items at the bottom of boxes and lighter and smaller ones on top. This method keeps your belongings safe and prevents damage. Your goal is to obtain a level of stability that keeps them from toppling and falling when placed one on top of the other. Remember to lift the boxes in safe conditions because there’s nothing worse than injuring yourself while storing boxes.

Categorize your items

It’s easy to pack everything as it comes at hand, but it’s smarter to organize the things into categories to save time when moving the boxes out or looking for particular items. The ideal way to categorize belongings is to separate them according to their location in the house or group similar things together.

Labeling the boxes is also essential when housing items in a storage unit because it saves you time and reduces stress when you need to retrieve something.
