This Artist Is Comfortably Cruising His Delorean Into The Future

Joey Luxx debut album ‘Space Tape, Vol. 1’ sounds like the New Jersey artist is taking us on a joyride through a 90s arcade. Since we are going back to the future, we are joined by 808s and trap drum patterns.

What a pleasant surprise! A single look at the cover tells us a little more about the sound direction we are headed for. The nerdy old cassette tape look is the first obvious hint to the old school homage placed in Joey Luxx’s debut long-player.

The Intro track starts with the time travel and the fitting samples. We feel a little like floating out of our 80s or 90s childhood’s bedroom and straight into space.

The artist, who had shown promising glimpses of his talent on his ‘Warm Up’ EP last year, is set to tell his story along the trip of this body of work.

The LP seems to serve the classic purpose of an album – telling a story while offering more pages for the artist to tell his own.

The 808 hits us offbeat as it does in 2020, while Joey Luxx leans back and flows over the beat with an arrogant nonchalance that you can’t deny buying his delivery.

In a time of plenty of artists meeting us with predictable vocal patterns, the South Jersey artist shows his strength. Verses as well as hooks are based on strong melodies that do brilliant production justice. It’s incredible to find out that there were multiple beatmakers involved in these projects, as it all sounds made out of one piece, as a classic album should. Massive credits both to the beatmakers as well as the artist for his beat picking abilities here.

And in general, there are a lot of things here that just sound right. Only a product of detailed and passionate work can sound effortless in a positive way.

The previously released single ‘Solar’ off the album was published with the fitting visuals prior to the album release this year and shows Luxx in his neighborhood. The visuals complement the retro sounds with lo-fi edits.

Malcolm Parrish put his efforts into a career as a professional basketball player, until he decided to put Joey Luxx in the forefront and dedicate his full time and muse to music.

A clear message to his love for music and we are looking forward to seeing him thrive from his mix of discipline and talent in this new industry. A place, that he definitely belongs.
