Disrupt Featured Interview: Deja Vu and Behind The Music

In today’s interview we will be learning about the rising rapper from California, Deja Vu. Recently the rapper has been blowing up from her biggest release yet called “Chop Chop”. Now reaching new levels of success, it’s time to find out who is behind the music.

Tell us about your background getting to where you are today?

A lot of getting in my own way I must say. But as most of us in the business, I’d had a long run doing so many things from being in groups and vocal training as a singer, writing, backup dancing, modeling, to rapping. I’ve made many connections and built relationships along the way and the moment I got out of my own way and linked with my guy Tony Jones man everything started falling right into place in the midst of an unfortunate pandemic.

Where are you from? When did you start music?

Los Angeles(Ladera Heights)/Inglewood, Cali. I would say I officially started music in high school. After forming and joining several girl groups and vocal training from my sisters who were already amazing vocalist, I knew this lane was were I wanted to be. Rapping was secretly what I wanted all along. Lol

What is the most challenging thing you have overcome in your life?

As far as the business goes I’m gonna say being consistent. That’s been my biggest challenge.

How did you get into music?

I was always around it. My parents stayed playing the joints to have you 2 stepping in the living room. I was a dancer growing up, cheerleading etc. After hearing Oooooh on the TLC Tip I wanted to be a rapper. Singing was automatic because of my sisters amazing voices but rapping was what I secretly wanted. I did my share of girl groups in high school but in ‘09 I hit the stage in Hollywood for the first time ever as a rapper and blow everyone away. I been spitting bars ever since. LOL

Are you currently signed or independent?

Independent. OhBoi Ent/ 44 Sounds

Who inspires you the most musically?

It’s difficult to point to 1 artist. I’d have to say the artists who have a message behind the music. Positive influences. Teyana Taylor. She wears so many hats and she reminds me a lot of myself if that’s safe to say. Lol Before her my whole reason for even rhyming was Left Eye. She gave me my voice as a rapper.

What do you want people to take away after listening to your music?

Please please please whatever it is in life you decide you want to do, Do not get in your own way. You have so many outside factors that will be working towards doing that already. Do not add to it. Stand on what you believe in no matter the crowd or circumstances. Take pride in something positive. Spread love!

What is the purpose/reason driving you to pursue music?

The platform. It speaks to the people. With the right position of power, I can be a positive influence. I have children, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc who need that balance of righteous and ratchet(lol) in music as well as in life you know.

What is your greatest achievement as a musician?

Finding my confidence, and stepping out on my own. Not relying on group members and owning my spotlight.

Do you produce your own music? If not, who do you work with?

I do not. Majority of my music is produced by Starreon w/ OhBoi Ent.

Who is one artist you wish you could work with?

Definitely not 1 artist but off top I have to say Teyana Taylor and Chris Brown. No doubt

Tell us about any new music you have coming out?

I’m currently promoting my new single “Chop Chop” as well as the video that just dropped as well. Check it out!

What does a day inside your shoes look like?

Well I am a mother and a wife and many other things to many people outside of being the artist you see before you (lol) so my days start at 7am from cooking, cleaning, homework, laundry and errands, to studio and rehearsals, meetings and photoshoots. It’s a lot to carry but I have INCREDIBLE support so I have not an inch of room to complain honestly.

Anything else you want the audience to know about you?

I’m just dope man. I’m a loyal, goofy, potty mouth, thoroughbred and it’s time for the world to finally know MF’n Deja Vu!
