Jesse Doherty’s Multi-Million Dollar Sales Tips: The Art of Motivation

Jesse Doherty

“With great power comes great responsibility.” A quote that we’ve probably all heard before. It’s one thing making a million dollars, but it’s another teaching a million people to do the same thing you did over and over again. Jesse Doherty started at American Income Life Insurance Company with no sales experience what-so-ever and managed to grow to millions in sales in under five years, teaching several other like-minded individuals to do the same. An incredible feat to accomplish for anyone, especially in such a short amount of time. “We’re not at a million in the bank yet but we’re on our way” He chuckled when we asked about his current success. One thing that keeps Jesse at peak effectiveness and grants him the ability to maintain such a fast-paced lifestyle, is placing a great deal of emphasis on mental health, happiness, and overall well-being. Stress levels are intertwined with your overall effectiveness in business, and in part, determines how successful you are and will be.

Stress, we’ve all dealt with it, and it’s particularly troublesome at work when you need to stay on course to continue to be productive week after week. So we asked Jesse what his biggest tips are for distressing in such a fast-paced industry, “Oftentimes it doesn’t take much. I like taking a quick walk outside, getting some fresh air, and then getting back to work. A few minutes of clarity goes a long way. When I take little breaks I try to stay off my phone and away from mindless distractions. Finding some peace in a busy workday is the key. Outside of work, I would suggest doing something that you’re passionate about. Being creative is the best way to distress me.”

Entrepreneurship can often take a toll on your mental health, you feel drained, uncertain about the future, and confused about what to do next. How do you reset and keep going every day? “I truly believe you should do something you love EVERY day. Play video games, read your favorite book, go for a walk, hang out with your friends and family. This always keeps me going. You should also remember that it’s ok to take a break, a long break if necessary. Time off can really help you reset and refocus. You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

Structure. You can have all the energy in the world but if you cannot figure out a way to accomplish everything you want to do because your life is too scattered, a schedule is a crucial tool to maintain balance and manifest your goals. Jesse says, “Having a LIFE schedule is important. Scheduling your entire day from when you wake up until you go to sleep will allow you to feel accomplished every day. That said, always be flexible with your schedule. Being able to adapt to things as they come to you will keep you quick on your feet and decisive in your business. Remain disciplined. One of my favorite authors and ex-navy seal Jocko Willink said Discipline creates freedom, that always stuck with me. The more disciplined you are now the more freedom you will have in the future.”

At this level of success, it takes someone driven to succeed and hungry for more keep going despite already having all your bases covered. For many, once basic needs are fulfilled, their motivations are fleeting. It’s hard to maintain that same urge to go above and beyond for many. What keeps you motivated throughout the day to keep going? “The question should really be what keeps me committed every day. Motivation is a funny thing. Some believe that motivation is this ongoing, everlasting feeling that you need to find. In my experience, Motivation is by the day. Ambition is by the day. These are feelings that need to be refueled every morning when you wake up. Motivation and ambition are fleeting though. It’s less about what keeps you motivated and more about the discipline you have to push through even when you don’t want to. Going to the gym for the 7th day in a row when your body is tired and every part of you is telling you to sleep in, that’s not motivation, that’s discipline. My advice will always be to stay committed to a disciplined schedule over pursuing fleeting moments of motivation.

As the saying goes, we all had to start somewhere. In sales especially, many have to enroll in the school of hard knocks before they become truly successful at this craft, you have to be willing to get denied, insulted, and let down regularly but not let it affect your attitude in order to maintain exceptional results in business. What advice would you give someone just starting today? “You only truly fail when you quit. The difference between a winner and a loser is a winner plays until they win. Remember, you have to outwork, to outlast, to outlive. What I mean by that is, there will be many people starting in your field just like you. First, you have to outwork them, hustle always beats talent. When you outwork everyone else that allows you to get ahead. Then you must outlast. The name of the game isn’t to be the individual who rises the fastest, but who stays consistent and outlasts the competition. Once you outwork and outlast, now you have the freedom to outlive and have the lifestyle you’ve always wanted. If your heart pumps blood and your lungs still inflate, you’re still in the game.”
