Jovan Stojanovic is an award-winning business mogul and co-founder of EcomPhoneSales.com, a disrupting Toronto-based startup allowing e-commerce brands to reach new levels of profit with one simple tweak: phone sales.
Jovan Stojanovic, co-founder of Ecom Phone Sales was kind enough to sit down with us and chat about his rapidly growing startup.
So Jovan, how did you come up with this concept of phone sales for e-commerce?
Jovan: Well it’s a bit crazy. Initially, we were an info-course-based business, but after certain events occurred we decided to focus all our efforts on building e-commerce brands instead.
When we made this decision to switch, we also had an office with 20+ employees and a lot of them were salespeople. This pivot in business would mean letting all the salespeople go because there was no program for them to sell anymore.
But then we had a wild idea….
Since our e-commerce brand grew quickly, we had a lot of abandoned carts and thought maybe the salespeople could call these people to see why they left the checkout page, and perhaps politely persuade them to finish placing their order.
We didn’t know if this would work or not so we assigned one sales guy to try it.
24 hours later he successfully recovered 11 abandoned carts and generated us an extra $1390 in revenue — simply by picking up the phone and calling people!
We spent the next year growing our sales team & calling all of our abandoned carts for our different brands. Doing this outbound (and eventually inbound) phone sales has increased our daily revenue by over 30%, giving us huge boosts in profit margins and allowing us to spend way more money to acquire new customers.
It’s given us a huge competitive edge, and the crazy thing is no one else is doing this. Most e-commerce brands rely on email marketing or retargeting ads… but NONE of them are doing phone sales.
When we realized how much money brands were leaving on the table by not calling their abandoned carts & customers, that’s when we finally launched EcomPhoneSales.com — and it’s been growing rapidly ever since.
The model is simple: we provide commission-based phone sales agents to ecom brands, calling their abandoned carts and customers to generate more sales.
We charge our clients nothing upfront, and instead, we take commission every time we make a sale for them. We truly believe in win-win situations, and that’s why we’ve structured our pricing accordingly.
What are some of the challenges you’ve had to face to get to where you are today?
Jovan: Usually when you launch a business the hardest part is finding paying customers, however for us the challenge has been the opposite. Finding, hiring, and training enough sales talent is the hard part. Even bringing on just one medium-sized e-commerce brand as a client can require 10 of our sales agents!
So it’s a bit tricky to maintain our inventory of available agents, which is why we’re always doing rounds of hiring, and each round of hiring may contain anywhere from 30-60 candidates.
We’ve even had to implement a waiting list since so many brands are eager to get started with our phone sales agents!
Do you have some practical advice for those people who might want to get started in a similar career as you?
Jovan: When it comes to entrepreneurship, my starting piece of advice is you have to make a decision that this IS what you want to do.
No matter which business you decide to launch, the first thing you have to do is DECIDE, without a doubt, that you want to and WILL do this.
The next big thing after that is to also take a good hard look at your environment. Is your environment set up to allow you to succeed or fail? Or even somewhere in between?
You want to BUILD a winning environment, and sometimes that means making tough decisions.
Are you living with negative people? Family members, that don’t support you? Friends who sit around and smoke weed all day? Lots of unnecessary noise that may distract you? If so, do something about it. Change your environment to a winning environment because it will play a huge part in your success & failure.
What are some of the quotes that make you feel most inspired?
Jovan: I enjoy quotes or written excerpts that remind us of universal truths which we may have forgotten. “Love is recognition of oneness in the world of duality”
Currently, what is the big message you’d like to highlight for Shopify or ClickFunnel business owners?
I would say this: no matter what you’re selling, whether it’s e-commerce products or info products, just know that you can significantly increase the ROI on your ads by adding phone sales. In the online world of rising ad costs, you need every competitive edge you can get, and adding phone sales might be the piece you’ve been missing this whole time.
