Preparing for the Uncertainties of Life, With Todd Jarvis, Attorney and Strategic Advisor

If the last year has taught us anything, it is that no one knows what the future holds. After experiencing his own life-altering event several years ago, attorney, Todd Jarvis, changed the way he works with business owners and families. Todd Jarvis is a husband, father of 7, and expert lawyer for businesses and families. He began his career working in software and studying bioinformatics, where he had the opportunity to head-up multiple projects and innovations. It was within this role that he realized his passion for entrepreneurship. Not long after, Todd and his young family relocated to Tucson, where he attended the University of Arizona where he simultaneously obtained his law degree and a masters of science in genetics. At this point, Todd was confident he wanted to work with businesses in technology, biology, and pharmaceuticals so continuing his own education was a natural next step. Because of this additional education, Todd was also able to take the patent bar exam and is now a registered patent attorney. After a few years of working with a regional firm, Todd officially founded his practice, Strategic Legal Works, also known simply as Jarvis.

For several years, Todd worked with businesses, playing a strategic role in the legal side of their business and ensuring their practice had a firm foundation. Seemingly out of nowhere, two of Todd’s children became very sick, a trip to the emergency room turned into a week-long hospital stay when his two young sons were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. As the dust settled, Todd began to contemplate his family’s preparedness. “What if it had been my wife or myself that got sick,” he pondered, “Would we have the ability to make the right medical, financial, and legal decisions for each other? Do we have the proper support system in place?” When he realized the answer was no, Todd set about changing the way his family planned for the uncertainties of the future and completely altered his approach to his legal practice as well.

Today, Todd takes a holistic approach to his legal strategy with clients. “I want my clients to be protected from every angle,” says Todd. This means taking a strategic role in their finances, marketing, operations, and fulfillment. Instead of providing one-off project support, Todd takes a long-term approach, coming alongside clients as a true partner in their business.

According to Todd, with the right tools, anyone can prepare for the unthinkable and avoid unwanted outcomes if the worst happens. “Asset protection, wills, trusts, and advanced directives allow you to take control of your future,” explains Todd. There are plenty of misconceptions when it comes to preparing for one’s future.

1. Young professionals and families assume that they are too young to plan for their future because they’re still building their life. Estate planning is a stodgy and outdated term when in reality it simply refers to the protection of one’s loved ones, health care, and assets. If one owns a home or has children, they technically have an estate.
2. Parents assume they have full control over their child’s health care decisions. After the child turns 18, the parents lose control over their health care decisions. For this reason, it is so important that parents establish themselves with a power of attorney so that they can make decisions in the event that the child is incapacitated.
3. They don’t think they need a trust. People falsely assume that trusts are just for the ultra-rich. However, this isn’t the case, trusts are an excellent way to keep family matters private (and out of the courts) after the death of a family member. Trusts can keep things smooth and simple during a time when emotions are running high and grief can cloud judgment.

“Though we cannot know what the future holds, we can ensure we’re protecting ourselves to the best of our abilities.” To learn more about Todd Jarvis and inquire about planning for your family’s future, with Strategic Legal Works, visit www.jarvislegacy.com, call 520-333-5123, or email info@strategiclegalworks.com..
